Understanding and Recognizing Nurse Burnout

Nurse burnout (sometimes referred to as “moral injury”), is a growing concern, with long hours, client demands, and high-stress work environments. It is not a sign of weakness or lack of commitment, but rather the result of working conditions beyond your control. Common signs include physical and mental exhaustion, difficulty concentrating and feeling disconnected from work. Burnout is especially common among younger nurses, making early intervention essential.

Recognizing the warning signs, such as fatigue, lack of motivation, or feeling undervalued, can help prevent burnout. Nurses can reduce stress by prioritizing rest, seeking support from colleagues or mental health professionals, and maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine.

Employers also support nurses’ well-being by providing resources and assistance, such as the Employer Family Assistance Program (EFAP). By recognizing burnout risks and prioritizing self-care, nurses can protect their health while continuing to provide quality care.
