Program Eligibility

SPE Participant applicants must:

• Meet all registration requirements except for current practice hours
• Not be ineligible for licensure for more than five (5) years
• Receive SPE program eligibility confirmation from the CLPNS

 

How to Begin

If CLPNS issued your eligibility confirmation and you want to complete the SPE program, please complete the following steps:

1. Complete the SPE Applicant Form.
2. Email the completed form to registration@clpns.com.
3. Pay the fee if applicable.

Each participant CLPNS approves for the SPE must begin their experience within six (6) months of their approval date.

Eligible SPE participants must arrange their own clinical placement with a CLPNS-approved host organization. Clinical placements can be in hospitals or long-term care facilities within the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) or other non-SHA organizations providing nursing services. If they already have employment in health care, but in a non-nursing role, their existing employer may be an excellent place to start.

Participants can use this letter to help them find an organization to host an SPE.

Once the participant’s clinical placement is arranged, the host organization will also submit an application for CLPNS to review and approve.

If the participant or the host organization believes additional SPE clinical hours are beneficial near the end of their placement, they can request an extension of another 160 hours.  The CLPNS must pre-approve all extension requests, as they are not guaranteed.  To request an extension, complete the SPE Extension Request Form.

After participants have completed their practice experience, they must complete a self-evaluation form.

Fees

If you were previously licensed as an LPN in Saskatchewan, the cost of the SPE application is $250.

If you are an internationally educated nurse (IEN), the IEN application fee includes the SPE application.

How to Begin

The CLPNS must pre-approve all employment agencies who want to host a Supervised Practice Experience (SPE).  There are two ways the approval process may be initiated, they are:

1. An eligible SPE participant asked your employment agency to host them or,
2. Your employment agency wants to host eligible SPE participants and is seeking approval.

The SPE Host Organization Application Form must be completed by the employment agencies for approval.

Once approved, the host organization and the SPE participant will work together to establish a mutually agreed-upon start date.  Host organizations must complete an evaluation once the program is completed.  It is not mandatory for host organizations to complete and submit the mid-point evaluation, but it is recommended.

Host organizations may also request that a participant’s SPE be extended by completing the SPE Extension Request Form.  The CLPNS will review all extension requests and approve them when applicable.

Host organizations may terminate an SPE at any time during the program.  If an SPE is terminated, the organization will complete the SPE Termination Form .

SPE Insurance Coverage

An SPE participant requires an LPN, RN, or RPN supervisor for the duration of the program who provides supervision and acts as a resource, role model, mentor and coach.

Supervisors for SPE participants are appointed by their own supervisor or manager and must evaluate their SPE participant at the program mid and end point.
