Virtual Practice

As the landscape of providing nursing care has changed, the CLPNS recognizes the need for virtual care services in Canada.

Virtual care is delivering health care services using technology, either by phone, audio/video conference, email, texting, or other electronic means.

To provide virtual care to residents of Saskatchewan, the LPN must

  • Be registered with the SALPN.
  • Have the competence to provide virtual care services.
    • Acquire additional education or training if necessary.
  • Uphold and practice in accordance with the Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics.
  • Follow employer policy and procedures.

Saskatchewan LPNs wishing to provide virtual care services to clients outside of Saskatchewan must:

  • Contact the appropriate nursing regulator before providing virtual care services.
  • Be aware of the jurisdiction’s requirements where you are providing virtual care services.
    • Do you have to be registered with that jurisdiction?
    • Confirm with your insurance provider or employer that the liability insurance covers virtual care services.
  • Follow all relevant legislation, regulations, standards, and ethics in both jurisdictions.
  • Practice within their legislated scope of practice.
